When you feel alone or challenged, remember Jean Batten
I was last in New Zealand in 2012. The last 10 days I spent in Auckland.
What does it mean to work for a big winery?
When it is harvest time, the wineries need a lot of extra seasonal workers.
In the past, in New Zealand, it was 80% foreign people from all over the world.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, it changed.
But how was it before?
I always had international colleagues in New Zealand.
Usually, if you want to apply for a job in wine, you need wine-related experience.
As I mentioned, it is possible that people first study something different and they arrive at the wine business... some people were journalists, fashion designers, tax advisors, social workers, dental assistants, even lawyers... during the three visits in New Zealand.
So we were on the way from Wellington to Auckland by train, which is a more than 10-hour train trip.
So we were two together with another woman. And in the last 30 minutes, we got into a fight...
She offered to stay at her friend's for 10 days. Then, just like in a soap opera... she punished me, and told me at the station, I should find a hotel for myself in the middle of the night...
Nah, this person was a lawyer... she never finished a winemaker education...
What to say?
Soap opera...
I solved the task.
I planned my 10 days.
It was 10 days alone! As she also forbade spending time together...
What was the reason?
I said, I worked very hard for my money, and I will go to fancy restaurants and pay even $100 for a dinner or lunch....
She said, I am just too uppish...
Hallo, hallo, hallo, I worked 12 hours every night! I had to make tousands of checks in the laboratory...
I was super tired, I wanted to enjoy Auckland!
I wanted to try out the best restaurants...
Nah, whatever.... I had to pay for my hotel every night $60 as it was booked in the last second...
Thank you soap opera!!!
So what did I learn being alone for 10 days in Auckland?
I made my research, I visited the War Museum, the Art Museum, the big Library.
I got an amazing document about Historical walks in Auckland. I visited a lot of places with the guide document.
I met Hungarians, I bought my first crocodile skin bag.
I visited the 5 Merchants houses at the University.
I learned that the Univeristy of Auckland student help office was originally a synagouge.
And a lot more... I also went to see a rugby match!
What was one of the most interesting story I learned in Auckland?
I learned about Jean Batten, who was the first woman, who managed to fly from England to Auckland, New Zealand. She did it alone!
When was it?
16/10/1936
How long was her yourney?
11 days and 45 minutes
So she did it longer, than me.
How old was she at this time?
27 years old!
How old was I that time?
I was 27 years old!
That is also a winemaker's life...
